Do you support free culture and free
software? Can you see where this is going? Creative Commons, the Free
Software Foundation, and OpenGameArt have launched a free-as-in-freedom
game design competition, the Liberated Pixel Cup:

Announcing the Liberated Pixel Cup: an epic contest for gaming freedom

We'll let FOO300 MediaGoblin founder Chris Webber explain what the competition is about:

Liberated Pixel Cup is a two-part competition: make a bunch of awesome free culture licensed artwork, and program a bunch of free software games that use it. Hopefully many cool projects can come out of this… but that will only happen if people like you get involved! Liberated Pixel Cup is a great opportunity for the commons in many ways! Right now it’s hard to find free culture content to bootstrap games that match a consistent style and hard for artists to collaborate on such. We’re also very interested in areas where free software and free culture directly intersect, which we don’t always see enough of (and which sometimes can even get a bit complex, so it’s good to have opportunities to think about them when we can), and games are a great example of this overlap. We hope you’ll participate!

This is an excellent project, so do get involved if you can!
the site and Matt, Rob and the developers (Elleo, jurg,
Clint, kabniel, warp and the others) are committed to
delivering some truly fantastic features on the site over
the coming year.

To kick things off, we have a promotion with Flattr where
you’ll be able to get an account and donate some money to
your favorite Libre artist (or to the site itself), and
Flattr will pick up the payment.

We have plenty more things to share with you, and for this
we need to email you. For this, you need to be registered on Libre.fm, so if you didn’t get this message, go register now.

During the coming months, we hope to have some new exclusive
Libre artists, news on local Libre.fm events in your area
and some new features for the site, as well as a return to
the monthly Libre.fm podcast (we just need to collectively
harass Mike for that one!) — all together, this could be
our best year yet!

We also have good work coming in the design of the
site. After the previous round of excellent work by Pablo
Lizardo, we’re working with another local (Boston) artist,
Brendan Mruk. Brendan is working closely with me to get some
concept art together, and we’ll soon be digitizing the work
and sharing it with you all.

Until then, you can see an example of Brendan’s work, here.

Remember, you can support our work directly by making a
donation: we accept PayPal, bitcoins, Flattr and more!

Foo Projects

2011 sees a change of direction of us: as you hopefully will
know, we’re not a software company, but an entertainment company:
so, to make this distinction clearer, we’re moving all of our
software and other community efforts to their own website:
http://foocorp.org/ — we call these things ‘Foo Projects’, and
our goal is to take new projects we work on, and eventually move
them to being community projects. We will continue to support all
community projects, with company resources, but putting them in
the direction of the community of developers and artists who work
on them.

Foo Projects will also have its own blog. Over there, we’re just
publishing the latest news on GNU social and GNU FM…

Your pals,

PS. We took this off our website a while ago. Maybe time to put
it back?

It’s my belief that history is a wheel. “Inconsistency is my very
essence,” says the wheel. “Rise up on my spokes if you like but
don’t complain when you’re cast back down into the depths. Good
time pass away, but then so do the bad. Mutability is our
tragedy, but it’s also our hope. The worst of time, like the
best, are always passing away.”
